A Shorter Wait at RDU Airport for Those Willing to Provide Fingerprints and Eye Scans

CLEAR, a company that uses eye scans and fingerprints to verify people’s identification and let them bypass a step at airport security checkpoints, has come to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

CLEAR kiosks are now found outside Transportation Security Administration checkpoints in both terminals at RDU. Travelers who create a company profile using an ID and their biometric information can check in at the kiosks and avoid having to wait in line to show identification to a TSA agent.

Those who pass through the CLEAR lane can go straight to the TSA screening area, but membership in CLEAR is not a substitute for going through the checkpoint. It’s also not the same as the TSA PreCheck program, which screens people in advance and puts them in a database that allows them to go through a different checkpoint lane with a shorter line and faster screening process.

CLEAR members pay $16 per month, billed annually, though there are discounts for veterans, active military, some government officials and people with certain credit cards or airline miles programs. Kids under 18 are free, if they’re with an adult member.

RDU becomes the 50th airport in the country to offer CLEAR; others include nine of the top 10 destinations for RDU passengers. Kasra Moshkani, executive vice president for operations, said the company could see that a significant number of its members were flying through RDU every day.

“We also get a ton of requests from existing members, tens of thousands who already actually live in the Research Triangle area, to come to Raleigh-Durham,” Moshkani said in an interview.

People can enroll in CLEAR at one set of kiosks at the airport. A company employee, called an ambassador, will walk them through the process, which includes iris and fingerprint scans and a scan of

Who’s the next victim on gun violence roulette wheel?

Some advice to clear up any confusion you might have over recent events in the land of the red, white and blue: Assume that everyone is armed and dangerous.

That includes my furtive neighbors, the grumpy mail carrier, the impatient patrons in the queue at Walmart and the overworked clerks, the road rage guy tailgating me on the freeway and, last but not least, the 6-year-old hanging on the monkey bars at my nearby elementary school.

Fortunately, I have only been shot at once. One would think that it would have occurred on the South Side of Chicago, where I grew up, but my American rite of passage happened in the mountains of southwestern Colorado.

A drunk cowboy was crouched behind a pickup truck with his equally inebriated girlfriend. He took a couple of shots with his rifle in my direction, although he might have been shooting at my dog. Thankfully, his aim was off. For a moment my anger at someone trying to kill my dog overcame my survival instinct. I began running toward him screaming my favorite obscenities, but then I thought better of it. He eventually drove off. I never saw him again.

When my adrenaline subsisted, I could hardly stop shaking. What just happened?

That was decades ago, before assault-style weapons became the weapon du jour of my fellow countrymen thanks to the efforts of the National Rifle Association, the lobbyist for the weapons industry and supplier of blood money for our spineless lawmakers.

The aftermath of the recent mass shooting in Monterey Park, California, in which 11 innocents died, follows the usual pattern of “thoughts and prayers,” pleas for common-sense gun laws and the usual pretzel logic of why those laws would unfairly infringe on our Second Amendment right to own military-style, human-killing machines.

Facial recognition will transform airport security checkpoints

Imagine using technology that never forgets a face, while improving airport security and shortening lines. Such technology exists and may be coming to an airport near you.

Every flyer over the past two decades knows that airport security procedures involve a lot of unpacking, screening and repacking. This is the price that must be paid for using commercial air travel.

Yet, it does not need to be this way, and the Transportation Security Administration has the right idea in testing and deploying biometrics such as facial identification technology at airport security checkpoints.

Although travelers believe that the most important task undertaken by the TSA is detecting threat items, the true role of airport security screening is ensuring that you are the person you claim to be.

The TSA has been working on moving more passengers from “unknown” to “known” status for more than a decade. The first effort in this regard was the introduction of TSA PreCheck in 2011, which gives travelers the privilege (for a fee) of accessing expedited screening lanes. This means that your shoes can stay on, your computers and electronics can stay in your carry-on bag, and light outerwear can remain in place.

The launch of facial identification technology enhances such efforts and has the potential to revolutionize the way that airport security checkpoints are designed and operated.

Facial identification technology ensures that you are who you claim to be. When presenting yourself at a checkpoint, your face becomes your entry pass, based on a repository of pictures that you have voluntarily provided in the past. These pictures are assembled from passports or visas.

Another technology the TSA has deployed to enhance identity verification is Credential Authentication Technology. This, in concert with REAL IDs, which regrettably have been delayed until 2025, as a requirement for

Credit Cards With Airport Lounge and Expedited Security Access

Terms apply to American Express benefits and offers. Visit to learn more.

It’s been a rough year for domestic and international travelers. Marred by issues related to understaffing, many airlines have found themselves in a precarious position — in this case, not having enough planes and crew members to accommodate so many travelers — leading to lots and lots of flight cancellations.

So far this year, over 130,000 flights have been canceled. For reference, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, from 2013 to 2021 — with the exception of 2020 — the number of flight cancellations never exceeded 80,000. At this rate, that number could end up close to the record 263,941 number of flights that were canceled in 2020 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Needless to say, it’s been a stressful time for those who have had to fly. And as demand for travel remains strong, it’s predicted that this will be a long-standing issue.

Thankfully, there are a few ways to make your next trip to the airport a little bit easier, especially if you have the right credit card.

Whether you’re a frequent flyer or you simply want to make your upcoming flight less of a headache, these seven credit cards are worth considering, as they each include complimentary lounge access and statement credits toward expedited airport security to make your next travel experience less stressful.
