The cheap February half term holiday destinations nobody else is thinking of

According to new data analysis by holiday rental platform Vrbo, the best time to book a February half term holiday is no later than the week before Christmas. But that’s not to say you can’t still find a reasonably priced break next month.

Skyscanner’s most popular flight searches for 11-18 February are Bangkok, New York, Dublin, Barcelona and Dubai, where flight costs are likely to be higher. The destinations with lower demand for the same week are Denmark – with flights from London to Billund, next door to the original Legoland theme park and several more family-friendly attractions, available from £30 return – as well as Ireland, Germany, Romania and Slovenia. In Germany, Bremen and Dresden are the cheapest destinations, while there are flights to Bucharest and Ljubljana – the respective capitals of Romania and Slovenia – from £110.

While the weather in both Bucharest and Ljubljana will be frosty, there is plenty to tempt a visit. Luv Fest runs in the Slovenian capital from 8 February to 12 March, with concerts, exhibitions, walks and family-friendly craft workshops. An ice-skating rink on the central square, Pocacarjev, costs just €1pp (visitljubljana.com).

Bucharest also offers excellent value for money, with hotels costing as little as £30 per night and café culture in full swing during the winter months. The city recently saw its oldest café, Cafeneaua Veche 9 – an 18th-century historical monument once frequented by poets and royalty – reopen. Its historic fittings have been restored, shining a light on a part of the city that gave it the name “little Paris of the east.” For more, see visitbucharest.today.

Spain and Italy are also reasonably good value, with Valencia flights starting at around £72
